Do you enjoy making complex policy issues accessible and engaging for a wide audience from journalists and policymakers to the public?

Not For Profit People are delighted to be working with a leading independent, non-profit organisation to recruit a Head of Transport Programme. This is a fantastic opportunity to lead a high-profile and impactful programme at a critical time for the UK’s transition to net zero. This role is ideal for someone who already understands the policy, political, and media dynamics shaping the UK’s net zero transition, and is ready to step into a hands-on and collaborative role in a purpose-driven environment.

About the organisation

Our client is an independent, mission-driven organisation providing evidence-based insight on the UK’s energy and climate landscape. Their work supports informed public debate and better decision-making on one of the most important challenges facing society today.

About the role

As Head of Transport Programme, you will lead an established transport programme, combining strategic thinking, analysis, communications and stakeholder engagement.

You will play a central role in shaping the focus of the transport programme, particularly in relation to electrification and electric vehicles (EVs). Working in a fast-moving political and media environment, you will ensure the organisation remains at the forefront of debate.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the strategy and delivery of the transport programme
  • Monitoring policy developments, identifying evidence gaps and shaping narratives
  • Producing and commissioning analysis, reports and briefings
  • Working closely with communications colleagues to develop impactful outputs
  • Acting as a spokesperson and representing the organisation across media, stakeholder and policy audiences
  • Building and maintaining relationships with journalists, funders and key partners

About you

We are looking for someone with existing policy expertise in transport, electrification or decarbonisation, who can translate complex topics into clear, engaging insights.

Essential:

  • Understanding of and interest in climate change and transport policy
  • Understanding of how policy is developed and influenced
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex ideas in clear, concise language for a range of audiences.
  • Ability to analyse data and summarise key insights in accessible, engaging formats.
  • Experience engaging with stakeholders, including media and policymakers
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, reactive environment
  • Experience in journalism, public affairs, policy or communications, particularly on technical or high-profile topics.

Desirable:

  • Experience as a media spokesperson
  • Experience briefing senior stakeholders
  • Experience in transport, climate, energy or environmental sectors

We encourage applications from people of all backgrounds, particularly those underrepresented within the climate and environment sector, including people of colour, LGBTQIA+ individuals, Disabled people and those from working-class backgrounds.
